The Journalism Scholarship

Overview

One of the Asian Journal Foundation’s key thrusts is education, and since Asian Journal Publications, Inc. is in the publishing business, we would like to nurture young and talented Filipinos who have dreams of taking up journalism or communication in college.

The Foundation will offer five (5) four-year scholarships every other year and incoming freshmen to the Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle University, University of the Philippines-Diliman, St. Paul University and University of Santo Tomas are eligible to apply.

ADMISSIONS

A four-year scholarship may be awarded to incoming freshmen who have been admitted to either of the five (5) universities mentioned and have indicated on their application that they intend to major in journalism or communication.

The Asian Journal Foundation’s Scholarship Committee will determine the selection of four-year scholarship recipients.Once admitted, students will keep the scholarship for eight semesters (through their senior year) provided they: • continue in the course work required for the completion of a Bachelor of Journalism or Communication Degree, • enroll in a minimum of 15 units per semester, • maintain the minimum grade point average as determined by the Foundation’s Scholarship Board • meet the criteria for the scholarship eligibility as outlined.

If a four-year scholarship recipient chooses to major in a degree other than journalism or communication, then the scholarship will no longer be available to the recipient.

ELIGIBILITY

All high school graduates who have passed the entrance examination of the five (5) universities mentioned shall be eligible to apply as long as they meet the following provisions – • applicants must pursue a degree in journalism or communication • applicants must secure two letters of recommendation • applicants must submit an essay of no more than 250 words explaining career objectives and why he/she wishes to be considered for this scholarship and explain his or her interest in the field of mass media studies.

Priority is given to students with strong academic records who have participated in journalistic activities in high school and show strong promise for building a successful career in newspapers, graphics, photography or magazine work.

The selection committee considers a broad range of criteria, including: academic standing, high school accomplishments, financial need, community service, work experience, work samples, recommendations and career goals.

The scholarship will cover the recipient’s tuition, mandatory and course-related fees, and an annual stipend for living expenses, books and academic supplies.

ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITY

Asian Journal Foundation scholars are expected to maintain academic standards as outlined by the scholarship, and by the overall scholarship standards of the university. The scholar must complete at least 15 units per semester and achieve a GPA of 2.0 or higher (and its equivalent) in order to maintain scholarship funding.

A recipient will lose a four-year scholarship and be placed on academic probation under the following conditions. • if the recipient’s semester GPA is below 2.25 or its equivalent, • if the recipient receives a grade below a 2.25 or its equivalent in a journalism course, or • if the recipient’s enrollment falls below 15 credit hours in any given semester without the consent of the college adviser.
